Many things in life depend on small decisions
which we make for unknowable reasons. There is
mystery, a “mist” we would say, in how things
are in this world, which is governed by
chaotic elements that are constantly unmaking
our being.

And this we shall call surface.

On our struggle with this constant change
we created systems upon systems,
codifications upon codifications,
just to discover that we are also chaos within chaos.

And this we call surfaces within surfaces.

A major issue of this chaos is the future.
We may believe that we contain the present.
Future will continue to slip from our hands
while things are evolving in front of our eyes.

And those are the bodies without surface.

RECREATIONAL DATA (Ben Vickers) presenting Possible Currency Zones of the Future… for THE PUBLIC SCHOOL in Athens at AB3, 2011.

For the curatorial project Word of Mouth in the 3rd Athens Biennale 2011, KERNEL invited a group of art collectives and artists whose creative practices respond, in various ways, to the contemporary terms of production, distribution and experience of the cultural product.

Reflecting on the current socioeconomic and cultural condition, Word of Mouth suggests the idea of a new “oral culture” of the network age that brought about original modes of cultural and political operation. Word of Mouth investigates these processes of distribution of the creative gesture, the more situational processes of knowledge production and the formation of hybrid communities.

Word of Mouth combines a programme of online-based projects, live events and installations that are being produced through a network of collaborations and presented during the 3rd Athens Biennale.

THE PUBLIC SCHOOL (TPS) is an alternative and independent educational project that was initiated by Telic Arts Exchange in 2008. Starting from Los Angeles, TPS has founded permanent, or more temporal, local ‘schools’ in various American and European cities, having gradually evolved into a global education network. In collaboration with TPS founders, KERNEL organized a period of experimental activity towards the Athenian version of THE PUBLIC SCHOOL.

Operating within the context of a wider topical dialogue for the future of the education system in Greece and in Europe in general, THE PUBLIC SCHOOL in Athens started its activity through a hybrid programme of pre-determined and more spontaneous classes. For that reason, KERNEL invited every potential ‘student’ and ‘teacher’ of this initial period of THE PUBLIC SCHOOL in Athens to propose classes that they would like to be taught, or teach. This temporal and destabilized ‘curriculum’ was characterized by an attempt to develop theoretical and practical tools for the understanding and management of the contemporary cultural and socioeconomic condition.

Series of classes and presentations have been realized by Ben Vickers, Georgios Papadopoulos, The Liverpool Fine Art Mobile Art School, Maria Sarri, MirrorMachine and Platon Issaias.

I 2011 was a presentation of the ongoing online-library project Index of Potential that took place at XYZ Outlet in Athens, as part of a series of one-night events curated by XYZ. The presentation involved the projection of a one-hour long video piece, an abstract narration inspired by the content and ideas represented in the library’s contributions. The website’s Index of contributors and contributed material was printed as a special-designed handout and distributed at XYZ Outlet.

The first realization and workshop of KERNEL Versions took place in ASFA factory Athens, Greece 2009.

The construction consisted of the following sections:

Platform: The platform’s basic design is extended and two steps are added for easier access.
Tower: Some of the tower’s parts are removed but all its functions are kept.

-A PC for access to KERNEL Versions website.
-KERNEL Versions archival material.
-KERNEL Versions construction tools and spare parts.
-Mini amphitheater for the projection of KERNEL Versions tutorials.
-Workshop space for editing and submitting Versions proposals offline.
